DIY on a DIME with Wooden Crate – Simple Bookshelf and Organizing idea for you to make
Here is to all of you DIY’ers and especially for those of you who “want” to make your own furniture, but don’t want to tackle a huge DIY project. Crates are a huge decorating trend and they are perfect for organization. I especially like this idea because each little cubby can house a category of things ready for easy access when I need them.
I created this diy bookshelf – slash – sofa table using six crates that I purchased from my diy hardware store for under $12 each. I painted them with a high gloss paint called “haven of coziness” (don’t you just love that name?) by Clark and Kensington. Then, I literally slapped on a coat of off white gloss paint to hit and miss and gave it my aged look with a little bit of stain (I share the video technique here)
The distressed look was perfect!! I anchored all of the crates together in place with wood screws. It wasn’t totally necessary, but just in case, I didn’t want them to go anywhere. In the DIY how-to video I show you how I made the table top for the bookshelf. Again, it’s an easy DIY table top. I do have tools, or let me re-phrase that, I have borrowed my Dad’s chop saw which really made it easy to miter the corners. However, you can do the same with a hacksaw and a mitre box, especially since there are only 4 cuts to make. There’s nothing like a little elbow grease to make you feel a sense of accomplishment!

I made mine with a 1 x 10 that I had cut at the hardware store to 40 inches. In actuality, I should have bought a 1 x 12 because it would have allowed the top to overhand around all the sides. Since the back side was up against the little loveseat we purchased, it didn’t matter, but something to think about before you start this DIY project. Here’s a hint though, make sure you use wood glue when attaching the front trim pieces. It really helps to add extra durability to the table top and will keep your trim in place nice and tight!

I cut a strip of MD Hobby and Craft’s Union Jack pattern and attached it to the front of the table top using furnature tacks. It really gave it a nice touch and to cover up the hole in the bottom of each crate (which is really the handle) I cut diamond tread metal to size and inserted it. It really brightened up the shelfs and made for a nice display.
I’m going to have to do a repeat of this project for my studio since I love how easy it was for me to assemble by myself with just a few tools!
