As you can tell, I’m having a great time in the studio! It’s now CHA crunch time and I’m working my little touche off trying to get everything done!
Last week I shared with you my secret to creating texture, but this week I’m sharing a DIY project – that’s full of all sorts of awesome-sauce. – Click here to watch the video on youtube
When I realized I had a bunch of wood scraps laying around, my mind began racing trying to figure out just what I could make with them. The reclaimed wood caddy was the perfect project. It’s quick and easy to make and it’s a decorative thing to have sitting out to store stuff in. Okay, well truth be told, I’m a sucker for anything that has a drawer pull or a knob on it and in reality I was just looking for an excuse to use some power tools. But, be that as it may, I put together a little how to video so that you can make one – or two…or ten…for you too. And then your Mom will want one, and your best friend….and then her Mom….Anyways…here is what you will need:
- A 3 foot length of a 1 x 4
- Two – 8 inch long pieces
- Two – Approximately 3 1/2 inch wide pieces ( measure the width of the board for the exact length)
- One – 6 1/2 inch length board
- Finishing nails – about 1 1/4″ long – or use the same size brads for the air nailer
- Hammer or air nailer
- Sandpaper and Sanding block or an electric sander
- Paint and paintbrush
- Chopsaw or hacksaw and mitre box
- Pencil
- Ruler or Tape Measure
Step 1: Cut the pieces of wood to length.
Step 2: Attach the front with nails to the two sides. Attach the bottom (6 1/2″ long piece) to the front and sides with nails and finish by attaching the back and nailing it in place.
Step 3: Sand the dickens out of it to make it smooth if you want
Step 4: Slap on the paint, let it dry and sand away some to distress. You can also give it an aged finish – click here to find out my secret to aging surfaces.
Step 5 – Attach the drawer pull with nail brads or drill holes for a knob. And if you don’t like that, do neither and leave it blank or stencil a pattern or paint words or a picture…you get the idea.
In actuality, I styled the photo with some of the letters from my Mom to my grandma – I’m sentimental like that. But there are loads of ways to use this caddy. Have an idea? Share it in a comment below. Come on- Speak up…don’t be shy! GO!
Seriously, If I can act silly on camera – you can at least leave a comment.
